Scottish Deer Pony.

The Highland Pony is still used in some parts of Scotland to carry culled stags and hinds down from the mountains.

Regarding Deer Ponies
While your photographs produce an accurate, genuine depiction of the Scottish Deer Pony, I feel obliged to point out that, although the animals in question are indeed magnificent. The reality of the whole is not explored in your commentary. Vis-a- vis, the afore mentioned ponies have no choice in the matter and further, have considerably greater humanity than the average gamekeeper. Who, it must be pointed out to our friends in foreign places, have absolutely no interaction with the put upon quadrupeds in question. Indeed, this falls to the remit of an individual bizarrely named the Pony man. Not a person of Sagittarian descent, but, the poor bugger who has to convince these animals that they should walk up 2000 foot mountains and walk back down with a 15-16 Stone Stag on their backs.
Nevertheless, the Scottish aristocracy, who have a disquieting tendency to be persons with dubious accents and even more dubious education, seem to derive an extraordinary amount of satisfaction from this activity. Perhaps we are asking the ponies to carry the wrong quarry? A reasonable open season on Gamekeepers and landed gentry would, I feel, make the pony man, pony and humanity generally, considerably more satisfying.
Please feel free to give me you’re response, especially if you happen to be of the afore mentioned class who has an intolerable grip on the lives of the average Scotsman. I’d love to argue the point.
Regards,
Enbtuli.
