Shoot To Kill Policy Extended - To Cover Hedgehogs.

The cull of hedgehogs in the Western Isles has taken a new turn with the announcement by Scottish National Heritage of a shoot to kill policy. Any hedgehog with mongolian features or dark skin, carrying a rucksack or wearing a bulky jacket and acting suspiciously will now be shot on sight.

Obviously it is possible that innocent birds who fit this description may be shot in error, but that is a price worth paying to save the eggs of the Lapwing and Redshank.

That's so sad. Really sad. I don't know what else to say, except that I'd like to go walking in your photograph. It makes me want to put on hiking boots and follow a trail.

Thanks Elizabeth. I've been over to North Uist twice in two years, during the month of May. The weather was like in the fotos on both occasions, with no wind or rain at all.

For the Western Isles that is little short of a miracle!

I imagine they are edible like puffins...

Thanks, djeb. I have heard that Gypsys used to eat hedgehogs, but can't vouch for that.
As good a food source as any other, I should think, and healthier than a lot of junk food we eat.
