Are The Poor Abandoned Again?
Surely, after Katrina, and the lessons that are supposed to have been learnt, this is not happening again to the poor and the marginalized in the path of Rita.
"I done called for a shelter, I done called for help. There ain't none. No one answers," she said, standing in blistering heat outside a check-cashing store that had just run out of its main commodity. "Everyone just says, 'Get out, get out.' I've got no way of getting out. And now I've got no money."

To be fair, they did have many buses to evacuate the homeless and those without transportation. Homeless people have less of a chance to hear the news. Had they gone to a police station, they would have been told where to go or taken there. I also heard that officials were trying to look for the homeless, to make sure they weren't left on the street.
The mass exodus was a nightmare that should have been foreseen, though. Florida would have the same problem, only worse. I'm sure they will learn from the mistakes. It would be nice if mayors and governors of the Gulf states and the Eastern Seaboard would have some kind of conference to learn from each other make better plans. FEMA should attend as well.

Point taken, Elizabeth. Certainly things have improved dramatically from what I can make out. I hope the impetus for improvements is kept up after the season ends.
