Basra - A Matter Of Image.

In the original version of "Diary of a Spin Doctor", Lance Price, former deputy media advisor for Tony Blair, says the following about Britain's decision to send Royal Air Force pilots on bombing raids over Iraq in 1998.

"I couldn't help feeling TB was rather relishing his first blooding as PM, sending the boys into action."

"Despite all the necessary stuff about taking action 'with a heavy heart' I think he feels it is part of his coming of age as a leader."

If that was indeed the view of the Prime Minister I wonder, assuming he has seen the images of the British soldiers escaping on fire from their armoured vehicle in Basra, if the graphic images have taught him anything about the horror of war and the deadly serious nature of the decisions he makes.

These men, amazingly, were not seriously hurt, assuming the reports so far are true. They were incredibly lucky not to have been killed, burned alive or stoned to death.

This image or the image Tony Blair has dreamed up of himself. Which is more real?
