Hurricane Relief.

Happily, Hurricane Rita seems to have let Texas and Louisiana off relatively lightly, although the images we have seen still look pretty terrifying to me. As yet, very few or no deaths have been reported, and hopefully that will remain the case.

Despite the enormous damage and the flooding, Rita may be remembered more for the biggest traffic jam in history rather than the storm itself. Overall, though, the handling of the rescue effort seems to be a massive improvement over that mounted - or not mounted - after Katrina.

President Bush must be thanking his lucky stars for this political blessing. It remains to be seen whether the handling of this emergency is enough to convince the American people that he really is capable of efficient leadership, or merely that the agencies, organizations and local government officials who deal with such disasters have got their act together, while Bush merely provided spin and photo opportunities for himself.
