Met Chief With Swollen Ego Says London Needs Him.
London police chief Sir Ian Blair says he considered resigning after the shooting of Brazillian Jean Charles de Menezes, who was mistaken for a terrorist and killed by police in July this year.
Explaining his reasons for not going, Blair said, "Because the big job is to defend this country against terrorism and that's what I'm here to do." He also stated that it would not have been right for the force, the country or the city of London for him to resign.
He certainly thinks a lot of himself after presiding over the biggest and deadliest cock-up by British police for many years, if not ever.
Sadly, Blair is not content with what he's got. He now would like to have real trained killers in his force as well as bungling bobbies. The suggestion that the police should be actively recruiting military personnel to be firearms officers after giving them a "small amount of basic training" and "clear instructions of their role on firearms duty" is surely a recipe for even bigger disasters, and another step on the road to a police state.
Is Blair not happy with his present title? Perhaps Colonel Sir Ian Blair would please him for a little while.
