Biggs Release Plea Rejected.
Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs has had his appeal for release from prison on health grounds turned down.
Home Secretary Charles Clarke refused the request by 76 year old Biggs because his condition was not deemed terminal.
I would think being 76 is pretty terminal, even without heart attacks and strokes.
What a heartless and mean minded government this has turned out to be.

A train robber?? Holy cow, I didn't even know there were any of those left!
If they don't let him out, they should at least let him lecture about the good old days when stuff like train robbery still existed. I'll bet he's got a bunch of good stories like that.

Thanks Sarkasmo.
The Great Train Robbery in 1963 was a one-off and a lot of people had a bit of a soft spot for these guys at the time, and a sneaky admiration at what they did.
Ordinary people were pretty shocked at the totally over the top sentences handed down when they were caught.
You're right, it's a great story.

Aw come on. They went after an amazing amount of money (at the time) and they got relatively high sentences. It was meant to send a message.
Biggs became a media star on his escape and only came back to leech off the NHS when he fell ill. He must have thought he'd serve a couple of years and he's be out. Thanks to the Home Secretary, he was wrong. That sends a message - a very welcome one - that sometimes, you won't be allowed to take the piss and get away with it.

Thanks c'est moi.
Yes, I take your point, and agree with you to a point, but still think that, taking age, health concerns and risk to the public into account, Biggs should be released.
