Teachers Rights And Dumb Cops.

Education Secretary Ruth Kelly is to introduce measures giving teachers legal rights to discipline pupils and restrain them when required.

A new law will give them "clear and unambiguous rights" to restrain kids using "reasonable force."

What is reasonable force?

The London policeman HERE probably considered he was meting out "discipline" and using "reasonable force" when he put a cheeky teenager in a bin.

He has been suspended - probably for being dumb enough to allow himself to be filmed doing it.

Comments:
This cop has been suspended, and what's happened to those who shot and killed an innocent Brazilian on the Underground?

Jez, thanks. You're right, not a lot so far. Whether anything ever happens to them remains to be seen, but I'm not holding my breath waiting for justice to be done.

For 30 years, my dad taught juvenile delinquents. For 25 yrs, the kids were minor offenders, picked up for loitering or smoking weed, vandalism, and other adolescent stuff. The last five years, the courts needed more room for their violent offenders, and sent them to my dad's school - without changing the disciplinary policies of the school. Effectively, the rapists and murderers were being sent to a mildly-disciplined boarding school.

And they still are, but my dad switched to being a substitute teacher after he retired (to allow for more bridge-playing).

Hi Sarkasmo. I take my hat off to your dad, it takes a special sort of person to do work like that - especially for 30 years.

Me? I'd get jailed for serious assault or murder after 10 minutes in a career like that.

Trouble here is that it's easy for government to trot out phrases like "reasonable force" to make like they are doing something, when in fact the term is extremely vague and would still leave teachers vulnerable to assault charges.

That's not uncommon, because all it takes is one kid's believable complaint. For the first 15 yrs, Dad would have to take a yearly martial arts self-defense course.

Now, he subs for a regular public school, and even the disobedient classes seem like they're full of angels. :)

Me? I would just stick to the bridge-playing and leave the wee brats to their own devices.

Not that I know HOW to play bridge.

Your Dad is braver than me!
