US Custody Deaths.
A report to be published later today by Human Rights First says that 98 prisoners have died in US custody in Iraq and Afghanistan since August 2002.
At least 34 of these were suspected or confirmed homicides caused by "intentional or reckless behaviour".
Another eleven cases are regarded as suspicious, and between eight and twelve prisoners were tortured to death.
"They (US troops) are human beings, they violate the law, they make mistakes and they have to be held accountable and the good thing about our system is that we do hold people accountable," the US ambassador told the BBC's Newsnight programme.
UK MP Bob Marshall-Andrews said that the report confirmed "in statistical terms the appalling evidence already available in footage".
"If it is indeed systemic, then the responsibility for it must go right to the top, and that would apply to both British and American governments," he said.
He's right, and I have no doubt he will waste no time in telling Tony Blair just that.

Unfortunately the Americans can get away with anything. It doesn't matter who they kill because they are doing it for the safety of the free world. BOLLOCKS, they have been doing this type of thing since forever.
Most of the time it is called friendly fire (where they are so incompetant that they kill their own allies because they have nothing better to do, or can't be arsed to go and find the enemy and need something to shoot at).
There was a documentary on TV last night about how the crew of a state of the art US navy ship accidentally mistook an Iranian passenger jet (with over 200 passengers on board) for an Iranian fighter and fired 2 SAMs at it, destroying it and killing everyone on board. Now I may not know much about military hardware but FFS surely it could tell the difference just by the size of the thing.
I could go on but I won't except to ask When is someone going to grow the balls and hold these incompetant, trigger happy, hooray henrys accountable for their actions.

Your rant is completely justified, Scouser. The view from the Bush admin seems to be that all are immune from such actions - apart, of course, from one or two token knuckle-draggers at the bottom of the chain, if it is politically advantageous to be seen to be taking such outrages seriously.
Scouser, you should read about amphetamine usage in the US Air Force as well, the reports have been around for some time that they are allowed to control their own supply of drugs when they go out on their bombing missions.
I'm not surprised there are so many so called "friendly fire" deaths, and innocent civilians killed. Exactly how many lives could have been saved if these drug crazed killing sprees were stopped?
