Mmm, countryside looks lovely round there. See any dragons? Legend says you should!
(It is also known as St.Martin's Stone. The symbols are reported as, Beast, serpent+Z and horseman. An old rhyme known in the area commemorates the event where Martin avenged the death of his lover by the Dragon,Kelpie.)

Hi Byronb.
This stone (Balkello) is about 5 miles west of St Martins Stone which, as you say, is carved.
St Martins is much smaller than this one, which is about 12ft tall. There are no carvings on Balkello.
St Martins is about 4ft high, and is surrounded by a small metal fence.
When I was at Balkello the other week I had planned to nip along to St Martins, but ran out of time. I have some old shots of it here somewhere but damned if I can find them.
I will post new ones as soon as I get back down there.
Dragons? Ha! I see them every time I have one dram too many :)

There are dozens of monoliths and stone circles in that area alone, and many hundred spread around Scotland, and identifying them is a nightmare, Byronb.
I do a lot of work with them, and my head spins just getting the map references right, never mind the names.

Thanks Sarkasmo. Spring had indeed sprung where the foto was taken, but further north on my 200 mile trip home it snowed heavily.
