Aw come on. They went after an amazing amount of money (at the time) and they got relatively high sentences. It was meant to send a message.

Biggs became a media star on his escape and only came back to leech off the NHS when he fell ill. He must have thought he'd serve a couple of years and he's be out. Thanks to the Home Secretary, he was wrong. That sends a message - a very welcome one - that sometimes, you won't be allowed to take the piss and get away with it.

The Great Train Robbery in 1963 was a one-off and a lot of people had a bit of a soft spot for these guys at the time, and a sneaky admiration at what they did.

Ordinary people were pretty shocked at the totally over the top sentences handed down when they were caught.
